"Mr. Ikenson is so wrong on so many levels I could write a book on all of them. Oh I did and another is coming out soon. However let me deal with several Myths he as so many others continue to perpetrate out of "ideological Ignorance"!.
"Relying on tariffs to save jobs is misguided, said Dan Ikenson, a trade economist at the libertarian Cato Institute in Washington, D.C, which champions free markets."
.......Ideally free markets are definitely the way to go. Where his "Ignorance" shouts out is that the world does not function as a free market but rather as MANAGED OR MANIPULATED markets. The problems here are much, much bigger than just the Steel Industry and much bigger than his points on Unions. As a Teammate at Nucor Steel for 32 years and CEO for 12+ years, a Non-Union company of 22,000; I can assure you it is not a "Bad" Union thing. I commend our partners in this cause for Championing this issue. An issue that goes to the heart of our rapidly shrinking global competitiveness.
...."He said little could be done to strengthen the domestic steel industry, short of consolidating mills in the hopes of increasing competitiveness. Such consolidation, along with increases in technology would probably lead to job loss"
........More HOGWASH, AND "IDEOLOGICAL IGNORANCE" .......Why? Simple, when the cheaters and law breakers are penalized and forced to play by the rules they agreed to to have access to our and the worlds markets, As the lowest cost, most advanced steel producers in the world we will be able to build 30 million more tons of the best steel making in the world. That will translate into 25,000-30,000 direct jobs and 0ver 200,000 indirect. So much for less jobs!
"Ikenson said such efforts don't represent a quest to save American jobs, but a support for protectionism"
.....Ah, there it is the protectionism argument, more Ideological ignorance, the all to common "you are bad people" translation. Let's be crystal clear, it is NOT protectionism to hold our trading "partners" accountable for Stealing, cheating, and braking the Trade agreements they made to have access to the worlds markets. It's the accountability of Tariffs, not the tariffs themselves that are the penalties for breaking the laws of the world trading system. Remember the steel industry does not get one penny from the tariffs, just legally priced steel. In fact we spend tens of millions filing and WINNING Trade cases and lose billions from their cheating.
I could go on for ever showing the depths of the Ideological ignorance that unfortunately infects many more than This "expert".
The truth is allowing this trading behavior, better know as Mercantilism has undermined the ability to have free and open markets. Only those who benefit from this lawlessness continue to spout their ignorance and support the stealing, both here and around the world.
The Mythbusters must unite! Fight on my Union friends, your non-union steel workers and leaders are fighting right along with you!"
